6 Ways Life Was Better After Vacation

I hope you are having a really good summer! My husband and I recently returned from a trip down to Costa Rica.  On this trip we intentionally stripped back on life in a way we’ve never done before. Almost no people, few traces of modern life (no tv and little technology), and few plans. A lot of walks on the beach, reading and simple meals.

When we arrived home, I was immediately struck by the supreme quiet and stillness in my mind. I felt so present in every moment, free from thoughts of the past or future and the noisy chatter of life. So good! As those first few days unfolded, life felt distinctly different due to this presence, reminding me of six important truths:

-Reduced Stress - There is beautiful freedom in just being, not ruminating over the “what if’s” or feeling the need to change anything. Life felt more open.

-Greater Happiness - When present we can see so many of the hundreds of tiny blessings and gifts that exist each day which cultivates deeper gratitude for life!

-Richer Connections - Conversations are more focused and responses more thoughtful, creating stronger connections.

-Respond Better - We can connect more clearly with our emotions, lending to more conscious and productive responses.

-Mental Clarity - Tasks/responsibilities are more easily accomplished staying focused on the here and now.

-Strong Connection to Intuition - We can hear e-v-e-r-y message inside when we are present.

Since weekly Costa Rica trips won’t be happening (😩), over the last month I’ve added tools to specifically cultivate and maintain more presence.  Morning meditation and journaling are staples, and highly recommended for many reasons!  But these new tools focus specifically on being in the here and now.

  1. Adding more “one minute mindful breathing moments” throughout the day. Turn from computer/set phone timer for 1 minute/close eyes and breathe, coming back to the here and now.

  2. Phone reminders of “being in the present moment” intention.

  3. Journaling at night to reflect on the day, where did I zone out? Are there patterns to pay attention to?

  4. Less TV/computer at night, more neighborhood walks (sans the phone!)

  5. Agreeing to less social events. Decrease hustle, noise, etc.

Living in this modern world is complex and dynamic. Staying present requires conscious practice and intentional effort, not just occasional vacations. If the above sounds like a lot, start with one thing. Or create something that works best for you.  5% more presence brings additional peace to your mind, body, and spirit that you didn’t have before, right? And if it all feels overwhelming, reach out. I’m here to help.

Warmly and with light,  Tracy
